Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection to the chaos that erupted at a funeral in Limuru, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was in attendance.
In a letter dated November 28, the senator was required to appear before the Nyeri Regional Criminal Investigations Officer (RCIO) on Friday, November 29, at 10:00 a.m.
The summons, issued by CI Joseph Chirchir of the DCI Limuru, stated that Thang’wa was believed to have information critical to the ongoing investigation into alleged malicious damage to property and injury to persons during the incident.
“In the exercise of powers conferred to me by Section 52(1) of the National Police Act No. 11A of 2011, I require you to appear before Nyeri RCIO on 29/11/2024 at 10:00 a.m. without fail,” the letter read in part.
Responding to the summons, Thang’wa accused the authorities of intimidation but confirmed he would honor the directive.
“They refuse to meet us at the CID headquarters on Kiambu Road but shamelessly summon us to Nyeri over an incident that occurred in Limuru. This intimidation will neither silence nor intimidate us. See you in Nyeri tomorrow at 10 a.m.,” the senator said.
Reacting to the events in Limuru, Thang’wa claimed the chaos was an assassination attempt targeting the former deputy president.
“We are here to say that this was an attempted assassination of Rigathi Gachagua, and it is being done only in Mt. Kenya,” he alleged.
The funeral incident, which took place at Bibirioni Boys High School playground, has sparked significant political tension, with investigations underway to determine the events leading to the unrest.
