The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs has issued a stern warning to Kenyan citizens regarding increasing cases of visa fraud and fake job offers. The warning comes as a result of numerous complaints from many Kenyans who have fallen victim to scams while applying for travel visas to various countries.
In an official statement on Tuesday February 4th, the Ministry emphasized the importance of obtaining visas through legitimate channels by applying directly on the official websites of respective countries. It cautioned against relying on agents or organizations, as visa application is a personal responsibility that does not require third-party approval.
The government also urged job seekers to exercise due diligence before accepting employment offers abroad. Many Kenyans have reportedly been defrauded by scammers posing as recruitment agencies, leading to financial loss and even deportation in some cases.
Additionally, the Ministry reminded citizens that overstaying a visa is a criminal offense under immigration laws. Those found in violation could face imprisonment, fines, or deportation, depending on the legal framework of the host country.
To support Kenyans seeking employment opportunities overseas, the Ministry reassured that all 67 Kenyan missions abroad are available to assist in verifying job offers and conducting necessary due diligence.
“It is important that persons seeking to travel to different destinations apply for the correct visas as provided on the official websites of the respective countries. Visa application is a personal responsibility that does not require the approval of agents or organizations,” reads part of the advisory.
This also comes at the time when President William Ruto’s government is urging young Kenyans to seek employment opportunities overseas as one of the methods to curb the high number of unemployment rate in the country.
The thirst for greener pastures and earning a source of living has made many fall in the hands of scammers and deceitful agents who only target to rob them their hard earned money.
