Harambee Stars will face Angola in their second CHAN 2024 Group A clash on Thursday, August 7, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Kick-off is set for 7 pm EAT under floodlights — marking a rare night-time kickoff at the Nairobi stadium.

Kenya Riding High After Opening Win

Kenya head into the match buoyed by a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo, thanks to a brilliant goal by Austin Odhiambo. The standout performance prompted President William Ruto to fulfil his promise of awarding each player KSh 1 million in prize money.

Despite the win, there are concerns in the camp after striker Masoud Juma picked up a knock during the DR Congo clash. Head coach Benni McCarthy confirmed that Juma remains a doubt but did not rule him out entirely, hinting at possible changes to the starting lineup. Manzur Suleiman, who had a solid display in midfield before going off injured, is expected to be available.

“We’ve analysed Angola. They press high and play with three forwards, pushing their wingbacks forward,” McCarthy told reporters during a pre-match briefing. “We need to counter that — just like Morocco did — and exploit the spaces they leave behind.”

Angola Seek Redemption

Angola, known as the Palancas Negras, come into the match desperate for a result after losing 2-0 to Morocco in their opening game. Coach Pedro Gonçalves confirmed his squad has no injuries and is ready for the challenge, brushing off concerns about playing away.

“It’s going to be a good atmosphere, but it doesn’t scare us,” Gonçalves said. “We treat every match the same — be it Kenya, Morocco, or Zambia. It’s about executing our strategy and overcoming the opponent.”

Recent Head-to-Head

The last meeting between Kenya and Angola was during the 2011 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Angola won the first leg 1-0 in Luanda, while Kenya triumphed 2-1 in Nairobi. In that game, current FKF President McDonald Mariga scored the winner and was later sent off.

McCarthy Mourns Former Teammate

Ahead of the Angola game, Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is mourning the loss of his former teammate Jorge Costa, who passed away on August 5 after a cardiac arrest. Costa famously captained Jose Mourinho’s Porto side to the UEFA Champions League title in 2004.

Where to Watch

The highly anticipated clash will be broadcast live on KBC Channel One, Azam TV, Supersport Africa, BeIN Sports, and Canal+ Sport.

As excitement builds, fans are urged to turn up early and secure their spots, with heavy security expected around the venue.
