Kenya to install new Deputy President Kindiki Kithure

Date:

Kenya will have a new Deputy President after the High Court vacated an earlier Conservatory Order stopping his assumption office.

The news came through after a three-judge bench empanelled by the Deputy President of the Supreme Court Philomena Mwilu, stated that the second highest seat cannot remain vacant.

Judges Eric Ogolla, Freda Mugambi and Anthony Mrima were unanimous in their ruling on Thursday stating that keeping the seat vacant was not in the best of public interest.

As a result of this ruling Prof Kindiki Kithure who is currently the Interior Cabinet Secretary is set to take the oath of office on Friday in the presence of President William Ruto and administered by the President of the High Court, Hon Justice Maartha Koome.

The seat of the Deputy President became vacant after the Senate voted with an overwhelming majority of impeach the former DP Geoffrey Rigithi Gachagua accuse by Parliament of 11 sins including propagating tribal and genocidal sentiments.

Mr Gachagua had dramatically disappeared from the precincts of the Senate as he had been expected to be cross-examined by lawyers representing the National Assembly as well as fielding questions from Senators.

His Lawyer, Paul Muite later reported that the former DP had been taken ill and admitted at the Karen Hospital for severe chest pains.

After two hours of wait, the Senate decided to go on with the voting without Mr RigathI taking the dock to be heard in person.

This marks a dramatic end to a political journey of a career administrator and former District Officer who rose to become an MP for Mathira and suddenly as a DP.

Mr Gachagua will be remembered for his divisive politics that at times would have ordinary observer be forgiven to believe he was a tribal chief of central Kenya.
