The Ministry of Health has announced a nationwide campaign to commemorate World Oral Health Day on March 20, 2025. The event will be held at Nduluku Primary and Junior Secondary School in Makueni County under the theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind.” This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of oral health and its connection to mental well-being and overall quality of life.

Oral health is a crucial component of general health, with poor hygiene linked to severe conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and respiratory infections. To address this, the government has been implementing policies to improve oral healthcare services and promote preventive care. The Kenya National Oral Health Policy (2022-2030) and the Kenya National Oral Health Strategic Plan (2022-2026) serve as frameworks for integrated prevention strategies, early intervention, and community-based initiatives.

As part of its efforts, the Ministry of Health has included oral health education in the training curriculum for Community Health Promoters (CHPs). Additionally, oral health indicators have been integrated into the electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS) to collect household data, while further steps are being taken to include these indicators in the Kenya Health Information System-2 (KHIS-2) for facility-based reporting. These measures aim to improve data-driven decision-making and enhance oral healthcare accessibility for all Kenyans.

To mark World Oral Health Day, the Ministry has organized a series of activities at both national and county levels. These include public awareness campaigns, collaborations with mental health professionals for educational forums and webinars, and free oral disease screenings at schools, churches, community health camps, and healthcare facilities. Mobile dental clinics will also provide emergency dental treatment, while outreach initiatives will offer curative services to those experiencing pain or life-threatening infections. Additionally, oral health tools such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash will be distributed to the public with support from corporate partners.

Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health, emphasized the vital role of oral hygiene in overall well-being. He urged Kenyans to take proactive steps such as regular brushing and flossing, reducing sugar intake, and seeking routine dental check-ups. “We encourage communities, healthcare providers, and stakeholders to support this initiative by participating in World Oral Health Day activities and spreading awareness about the importance of oral health,” he stated.

The Ministry remains committed to advancing oral healthcare services and ensuring that all Kenyans have access to affordable dental care. By promoting preventive measures and enhancing public awareness, the government hopes to create a future where every citizen enjoys a lifetime of good oral health.
