Kenya Power Triples Electricity Sales to Tanzania as Cross-Border Trade Expands

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has announced the successful trial run of power wheeling from Ethiopia to Tanzania through Kenya’s national grid, marking a major step toward regional electricity trade integration.

In an operational update issued on Friday, June 27, KETRACO confirmed that fifty megawatts of power were transmitted across Kenya’s network, showcasing the efficiency and readiness of the country’s transmission infrastructure to support cross-border power flows. The 400kV Suswa–Isinya transmission line handled increased power flow—rising from 225MW to 262MW—without any grid instability, confirming Kenya’s capacity to serve as a reliable electricity transit hub.

The trial, overseen by KETRACO’s National Control Centre, forms part of a wider strategy to facilitate power trade within East Africa. The project is supported by several international financiers, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, French Development Agency, European Investment Bank, and Kenya’s National Treasury.

KETRACO noted that the successful wheeling trial positions Kenya as a key energy transit country in the region, underlining the importance of its modern infrastructure in promoting energy security and economic integration across the continent.
