Kenya Railways has announced the launch of a special train service during the holiday season, connecting Nairobi and Mombasa.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 16, the authority confirmed that the special Madaraka Express passenger train will begin operations on Tuesday, December 17. The new service is part of Kenya Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance travel between Nairobi and Mombasa.

“We are pleased to inform you that a special Madaraka Express passenger train will be operating on December 17, 2024, from Nairobi to Mombasa only,” the statement read in part.

The special service will operate as a one-way route between the two cities. Kenya Railways added that the journey will take approximately six hours, with the train departing from Nairobi at 10:30 am and scheduled to arrive in Mombasa at 4:30 pm.

The Madaraka Express, known for its efficiency and comfort, remains a key link for both passengers and freight. Passengers wishing to book tickets are encouraged to visit www.metickets.co.ke or check the Kenya Railways website for available slots.

This announcement follows recent changes to the Madaraka Express timetable, which were influenced by directives from President William Ruto. On December 3, Ruto ordered the return of a stopover at Voi, a decision that was immediately implemented by Kenya Railways. This change came in response to requests from residents who rely on the service for night travel and business facilitation.

“I have directed the Transport Ministry, and they have confirmed that from December 15, the train will start the night stopover at Voi,” President Ruto stated.
