Kenya Railways has announced the installation of advanced communication devices on train wagons using the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) line.
In a statement dated Monday, December 2, the corporation revealed that the devices will enhance communication between officials operating the trains, staff at various stations, and those working on the trains.
The new devices are also expected to boost safety measures for train operations.
“In an effort to boost operational efficiency and enhance safety, Kenya Railways recently introduced state-of-the-art two-way radios known as the Motorola R7 portable radio, as well as the Motorola DM4000e, a stationary audio amplifier installed in train locomotives,” the statement read in part.
According to the corporation, the acquisition marks a significant improvement for the MGR operations. Staff from relevant departments had the opportunity to address their questions during a familiarization training conducted at Kenya Railways Headquarters by the devices’ suppliers.
As part of the rollout, the devices have already been deployed in the Nairobi Commuter Train service.
“The devices are impressive, especially their advanced features like water resistance, tolerance to high temperatures, and long-range communication with exceptionally clear audio reception,” stated Charles Mutai, a points-man at Nairobi Central Railway Station’s Yard.
Meanwhile, the corporation disclosed that preparations are ongoing to reopen the Nairobi-Kisumu line. Train services to Kisumu were suspended due to a landslide that damaged sections of the railway tracks.
