Kenya Railways has announced the introduction of Reefer wagons to facilitate the transportation of perishable goods to the Port of Mombasa.
In a statement dated March 19, the corporation revealed that the specialized wagons are designed to handle cargo that requires temperature control, ensuring fresh produce reaches its destination in optimal condition.
“The Corporation has introduced Reefer wagons to enhance the transportation of perishable cargo. Fresh produce can now be collected from Fresh Produce Consolidation Centres and transported via rail to the Port of Mombasa for onward shipment to Europe and other markets,” the statement read.
Kenya Railways further noted that the initiative is part of a larger plan to establish a Cool Logistics Corridor, aimed at improving the efficiency of fresh farm produce transport across the East African region.
“This move aligns with Kenya’s commitment to developing a Cool Logistics Corridor, which will boost the horticulture sector by ensuring efficient transportation of fresh produce within the region and beyond,” the corporation added.
Advanced Cooling Technology
The new Reefer wagons come equipped with cutting-edge technology to maintain optimal conditions for perishable goods throughout transit.
“These wagons feature real-time temperature monitoring systems, guaranteeing that perishable cargo remains fresh during the entire journey,” the statement further stated.
Historically, early reefer wagons relied on ice blocks to maintain cool temperatures. However, modern technology has introduced more advanced methods, including diesel-powered and electric refrigeration units, as well as cryogenic cooling techniques that use liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide for ultra-cold transport. Some hybrid reefers also integrate insulation enhancements to improve efficiency.
The introduction of these specialized wagons is expected to streamline logistics, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in the global fresh produce market.
