The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) has issued a nationwide call for the recruitment of new prison constables, with the exercise set to take place on April 30, 2025.
According to Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh, the service is seeking both male and female recruits who meet specific eligibility requirements. Applicants must be Kenyan citizens, possess a valid national ID, and have attained a minimum grade of D+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). In addition, they must have a clean criminal record.
“The recruitment targets individuals aged between 18 and 28 years, with a minimum height of 5 feet 4 inches for men and 5 feet 2 inches for women,” Aranduh stated. He emphasized that all candidates must be in good physical and mental health, with proper hearing and clear vision. He further clarified that female applicants must not be pregnant during recruitment or throughout the initial training phase.
Successful applicants will undergo a rigorous paramilitary training program lasting no less than nine months.
Aranduh cautioned the public that the exercise will be conducted free of charge, and warned against bribery or any form of corruption. “Anyone found with forged or fake documents, or engaging in corrupt practices, will be disqualified and prosecuted,” he warned.
He also reiterated that recruitment will be carried out only at designated centers on the officially announced date, urging candidates to present the required documents, which include their original ID, academic certificates, KRA PIN, birth certificate, and any relevant testimonials.
Those recruited into the Kenya Prisons Service will be responsible for various duties including supervising inmates, maintaining order and security within prison facilities, and escorting prisoners to courts, hospitals, and other locations.
Additionally, constables will take part in inmate rehabilitation programs such as vocational training, religious sessions, and educational support, while also helping maintain discipline within correctional institutions. Record-keeping, incident reporting, and supporting daily logistics like food service, medical care, and hygiene management will also form part of their responsibilities.
KPS has invited all interested individuals who meet the set qualifications to report to their nearest recruitment centers as listed in the official notice.
