phone connected to a charger

Kenya Power has clarified misconceptions surrounding overnight phone charging, noting that the practice is more costly than many Kenyans believe.

Addressing the myth on Friday, January 17, the utility firm explained that keeping phones plugged in after they are fully charged results in unnecessary energy consumption.

“Once your phone is fully charged, it continues to draw small amounts of power, which wastes energy over time,” Kenya Power stated. “We recommend unplugging your charger once the phone is fully charged or using smart plugs that cut off power automatically.”

The company further shared other energy-saving tips to help Kenyans reduce their electricity bills. For instance, it advised against filling kettles with more water than needed when boiling.

“To save on power bills, only boil the amount of water you need. Boiling a full kettle when you require just one or two cups leads to unnecessary heat energy wastage,” Kenya Power advised.

The utility firm also encouraged Kenyans to make use of natural light during the day instead of relying on electric bulbs and to unplug electronics such as TVs and music systems when not in use, as they continue to consume energy even when turned off.

These practical measures, Kenya Power emphasized, could significantly reduce electricity costs for households across the country.
