Kenya Meteorological Department Director Dr. David Gikungu.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert on rising daytime temperatures in parts of the Coast, North Eastern, and North Western regions, forecasting heat levels exceeding 30°C over the next seven days.

In a weather report released on Monday, December 9, the department identified several counties likely to experience the high-temperature conditions. These include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Tana River, and Taita Taveta in the Coast region. In the North Eastern region, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are set to be affected, while Turkana and Samburu counties in the North Western region are also expected to experience significant heat.

“Average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in these areas,” the report stated.

Conversely, parts of the highlands east of the Rift Valley and the central Rift Valley may experience notably low nighttime temperatures, dipping below 10°C during the forecast period.

Kenya Met also highlighted that some regions, such as the Lake Victoria Basin, the highlands east of the Rift Valley, the South Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast, would continue to receive rainfall. However, other parts of the country are expected to remain predominantly sunny and dry.

In a review of weather conditions from the past week, the department confirmed that rainfall was observed in the Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley, the highlands east of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised residents in affected regions to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
