Heavy rains in Nairobi.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of significant rainfall across multiple regions starting Sunday, March 16.

In an update on Sunday, KMD announced that key regions, including Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, and Nairobi, will experience rainfall. Other affected areas include the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands, and sections of the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya.

According to KMD, isolated storms and heavy rainfall events are expected in some areas, potentially marking the onset of the long rainy season.

“Isolated storms and heavy rainfall events are likely in some areas. This rainfall is likely to mark the onset of the rainy season in several parts of the country, although subsequent updates will be issued,” KMD stated on X.

Rainfall Projections

Rainfall maps released by KMD indicate that between March 16 and 17, South-Western Kenya will receive between 30 mm and over 80 mm of rainfall. Central regions, including Nairobi, will experience moderate rainfall ranging from 10 mm to 35 mm.

From March 17 to 18, rainfall will spread northward, with most areas receiving between 5 mm and 25 mm. Western and Central Kenya will continue experiencing moderate rainfall.

Between March 18 and 19, rainfall is expected to intensify in Central Kenya, Rift Valley, and parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, reaching up to 35 mm.

KMD’s seven-day cumulative forecast from March 16 to 23 indicates that total rainfall may exceed 100 mm in parts of Western, Rift Valley, and South-Eastern Kenya. The Lake Victoria Basin and Central Highlands will receive substantial rainfall, while the Coastal and North-Eastern regions will experience scattered showers.
