The Metrological department has issued a heavy rains alert saying intensity will surpass 20mm in the next 24 hours.
In a public notice Wednesday evening, director of Kenya Meteorological Department David Gikungu said areas to be affected lie within Central Rift Valley, Central Kenya—including Nairobi—and parts of the southeastern lowlands.
Affected regions include Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni counties
“Rainfall Of more than 20mm in 24hrs is expected from Thursday 14th November, 2024 in parts of Central Rift valley, Central including Nairobi area and southeast lowlands.
The weatherman said that the rainfall intensity is projected to increase on Friday, with expected accumulation surpassing 30mm within 24 hours in some areas.
“The rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24hrs on Friday 15th November, 2024 over Southeastern lowlands and central parts including Nairobi area.”
The Weatherman also advised residents in these areas to be cautious of potential flash floods.
“People living downstream of rivers and seasonal rivers should be careful as water may appear suddenly even when it is not raining in the immediate area,” stated the advisory.
Additionally, residents are urged to avoid driving or walking through moving water, open fields, and sheltering under trees or near grilled windows to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.
“People in landslide prone areas especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya and other hilly areas should be vigilant. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes.” The Kenya Meteorological
