In a major step toward sustainable industrialization, Kenya has commissioned a state-of-the-art steam timber treatment plant in Dandora. The initiative, spearheaded by the Kenya Development Corporation (KDC), marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward eco-friendly manufacturing and reduced carbon emissions.
KDC Chairman Dr. Sakwa Bunyasi hailed the facility as a transformative development for the manufacturing sector. “This initiative will significantly reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels,” he stated, highlighting the importance of sustainable investments in fostering economic growth. The project is a testament to Kenya’s commitment to industrial transformation, environmental conservation, and job creation, aligning with the nation’s Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The newly established facility integrates biomass-based steam production, reducing dependency on traditional fossil fuels. By embracing cleaner energy alternatives, the plant sets a new benchmark for industrial sustainability while enhancing operational efficiency. Dr. Bunyasi emphasized that such innovations are crucial for Kenya’s industrial sector as it shifts towards greener energy solutions.
The plant also incorporates advanced Vapour Absorption Machine (VAM) chillers, significantly cutting down industrial electricity consumption. This technology not only optimizes energy efficiency but also supports the broader goal of reducing industrial power demand across multiple sectors.
KDC’s Director General, Norah Ratemo, underscored the broader implications of the investment, stating that the timber treatment facility aligns with Kenya’s energy transition goals. “The reduction of over 7.3 million kilograms of carbon emissions annually and power savings exceeding 3.4 million units are remarkable achievements that highlight the impact of sustainable investments,” she noted.
Beyond the timber processing sector, the steam plant will contribute to the wider manufacturing ecosystem by providing energy solutions to key industrial players such as the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC). This cross-sectoral impact underscores the broader economic and environmental benefits of the project.
General Manager Daisy Kiplagat pointed out the substantial employment opportunities generated by the investment. The project is set to bolster job creation across the timber treatment value chain and biomass supply sectors, fostering inclusive economic growth.
The financing of the facility was made possible through KDC’s collaboration with the Export-Import Bank of India. The initiative leveraged the Government of India’s Line of Credit (LOC), enabling the acquisition of cost-effective, tax-exempt industrial equipment. This strategic partnership underscores the role of international cooperation in advancing Kenya’s industrial and environmental objectives.
