The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially reopened the Southern Bypass in Nairobi, restoring traffic flow after completing essential maintenance work.
In a statement issued on Sunday, January 5, 2025, KeNHA announced that the section of the road stretching from Ole Sereni Interchange to Ngong Road Interchange is now accessible to motorists.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to inform the public that the section of Nairobi Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni Interchange to Ngong Road Interchange has been opened to traffic today. The Authority appreciates your patience during the temporary closure for essential bridge and pavement repairs,” the statement read.
KeNHA also urged motorists to exercise caution while using the road. “Motorists are advised to observe road signs and exercise caution for their safety and that of other road users. Don’t speed to impress, arrive to embrace,” it added.
The bypass was closed on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. to allow for critical rehabilitation work. KeNHA had earlier announced the temporary closure through a statement dated December 23, 2024.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) would like to inform the public that a section of Nairobi Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni Interchange to Ngong Road Interchange (both carriageways) shall be temporarily closed,” the statement had read.
The closure was necessary to rehabilitate the expansion joints of all the bridges along the affected stretch and reconstruct the concrete pavement at the virtual weighbridge. The repair work was scheduled to be completed by midnight on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
With the repairs now completed, motorists can resume using the bypass, which is expected to offer a smoother and safer driving experience. KeNHA thanked the public for their cooperation during the repair period and reiterated its commitment to maintaining the country’s road infrastructure.
