The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has adopted Hand Packed Stone (HPS) technology in the construction of Mombasa Road as part of its efforts to enhance the road’s durability and structural integrity.

In a statement released on Sunday, December 15, KeNHA highlighted that the labor-intensive technology is designed to create a strong sub-base, extending the lifespan of the pavement. The authority added that the method ensures taxpayers receive value for money.

“KeNHA has adopted Hand Packed Stone (HPS) technology in the construction of Mombasa Road to create a durable sub-base and extend the pavement’s lifespan. This labour-intensive method enhances the road’s structural integrity, ensuring taxpayers get value for money,” the statement read.

To further address drainage issues caused by water percolation, the road’s contractor has introduced a rockfill base to stabilize the wet ground. According to KeNHA, the surface will feature a layer of Dense Bitumen Macadam and Asphalt Concrete, enhancing its strength and durability.

These developments come as KeNHA continues rehabilitation works on various sections of Mombasa Road to improve its condition and serviceability.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Administrative Justice (Office of the Ombudsman) has issued a 7-day ultimatum to Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Director General Silas Kinoti to address the deteriorating state of some roads in Nairobi County.

The Ombudsman raised concerns that the poor state of the roads is contributing to a rise in road accidents and negatively affecting the country’s economic performance.

“The condition of the roads has an overall impact on the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” the commission noted, urging KURA to act swiftly to remedy the situation.

KeNHA’s rehabilitation efforts and adoption of innovative technologies like HPS on Mombasa Road are seen as critical steps towards ensuring safe, durable, and economically beneficial road networks in the country.
