The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has announced a price hike for its DNA testing services, effective from January 2025.
In a statement released on Wednesday, January 8, KEMRI confirmed that the cost of DNA testing will rise by KSh 7,000, from the previous KSh 20,000 to the new fee of KSh 27,000. This marks a significant increase in the price of the essential service, which had been unchanged for several years.
“We wish to inform our valued customers of a price adjustment for the DNA Testing Service, which will now be KSh 27,000 starting in January 2025,” the statement said.
DNA testing is commonly used for paternity determination, inheritance disputes, and legal matters in Kenya. As one of the country’s most trusted service providers, KEMRI’s decision to raise the price is likely to have a notable impact on individuals seeking these services.
In addition, DNA tests are still primarily used for court-ordered paternity cases or criminal investigations. Meanwhile, the introduction of home DNA test kits costing KSh 600 in 2023 stirred concern over their accuracy and safety.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) recently warned Kenyans against using unauthorized home test kits, which are being sold online without approval. The PPB urged the public to avoid retailers marketing these kits, emphasizing that they have not been authorized for sale in Kenya.
