Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba

When Education CS Migos announced the much-awaited 2024 KCSE results lasty week it was clear, there was a good return for many candidates.

This is despite over 50 per cent of the candidates scoring a paltry Grade D-Plus there were nearly 2000 scoring the maximum attainable Grade A-Plain.

Considering over 960,000 sat the exams, the figure of those scoring A’s is almost infinitesimal in comparative analysis.

Yet this is a huge number comparing to results in the first three years of KCSE, namely 1989, 1990 and 1991.

Figures in those years show there were no candidates who could manage the A grade. Instead, the top students in those year had scored just an A-Minus.

So, there has been a great improvement in the performance over the years even as the 8-4-4 system of education that had replaced the old British 7-4-2-8 system introduced during President DanielToroitich Arap Moi tenure.

It is important to note that at its inception the 8-4-4 system experienced teething problems including lack of Text Books as well as teachers who were still ill-prepared to teach the new curriculum.
