After years of stalled progress and allegations of financial mismanagement, the long-delayed construction of Kamariny Stadium is finally back on track. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Friday morning visited the site to assess the ongoing works, expressing optimism that the project once a symbol of dashed hopes is now on course for completion.

“This morning, I assessed the construction of Kamariny Stadium, which has restarted after stalling for quite some time,” Murkomen stated. “I am confident that the new contractor on site has the capacity to complete the stadium on time and to the required standards.”

The 10,000-seater stadium, located in Iten, a town globally renowned for producing world-class athletes has been the subject of controversy for years. Construction was first launched with much fanfare but soon ground to a halt amid reports of embezzlement of public funds, triggering investigations and growing public frustration in the athletics community.

Under the new plan, the stadium is expected to be completed within a year and will cater to both athletics and ball sports. A second phase will include the construction of hostels to accommodate athletes in training camps, a crucial facility in a region that has long served as a training ground for Olympic and world champions.

The revival of Kamariny is seen as a critical step in restoring trust in public infrastructure projects and honouring the legacy of Kenya’s sporting excellence. Locals are hopeful that this time, the promise will be delivered.
