Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) commissioner Johnson Muthama has addressed rumors about his alleged defection from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
In a statement on Friday, November 15, Muthama criticized those spreading claims regarding his position in the 2027 General Elections, arguing that it was premature to discuss succession politics.
Muthama affirmed his loyalty to UDA, emphasizing that he values the party’s ideals and aspirations.
“As a member of an independent commission, I am prohibited from engaging in political discourse or making political statements. It’s absurd to see individuals making baseless claims about my alleged stance on the 2027 elections,” he stated.
“Why are we discussing succession politics three years in advance? People should focus on more constructive matters. I am firmly in UDA because it is the political party with ideals and aspirations I hold dear.”
Rumors circulated on social media on Thursday, claiming Muthama was leaving President William Ruto’s camp to join Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement.
Muthama played a crucial role in mobilizing support for Ruto in the Ukambani region before the 2022 General Elections.
In February 2023, he was nominated by Speaker Moses Wetangula as a non-MP Commissioner to the PSC, filling a vacancy created by Samuel Chepkong’a’s resignation to run for the Ainabkoi Constituency seat in the 2022 elections.
Muthama’s nomination was vetted and approved by both Houses of Parliament. The National Assembly unanimously supported his appointment, followed by concurrence from the Senate. He was officially sworn in as a PSC Commissioner on March 1, 2023.
At the time of his appointment, Muthama was serving as the chairperson of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
