IEBC Sets November 27 By-Elections as Baringo Prepares for Heated Senate Race

Date:

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that by-elections will be held on Thursday, 27th November 2025 in 24 electoral areas across the country, including a high-profile contest in Baringo County for the vacant Senate seat.

The Baringo senatorial race was triggered by the death of Senator William Kipkiror Cheptumo, who passed away on February 16, 2025 while receiving medical treatment in Nairobi. Under Kenya’s Constitution, a by-election must be held within 90 days of such a vacancy, although the process faced delays due to legal and administrative challenges.

Alongside Baringo’s Senate poll, voters will also cast their ballots in six National Assembly constituencies: Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja. Additionally, 17 County Assembly wards will hold mini-polls, spanning from Kariobangi North in Nairobi to Lake Zone and Nanaam wards in Turkana County.

The Baringo race is expected to draw national attention as political heavyweights position themselves for a showdown. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has publicly dared Gideon Moi, son of former President Daniel arap Moi, to test his political strength at the ballot box rather than relying on his family legacy — signalling an intense campaign season ahead.

Political analysts say the November by-elections will serve as a barometer for shifting political loyalties and emerging alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election, with parties keen to use the contests to build grassroots momentum.

IEBC is expected to release the official campaign timelines and nomination dates in the coming weeks, paving the way for what could be one of the most closely watched by-election cycles in recent years.
