The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has condemned the murder of Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, the Acting Kilifi County Elections Manager.
In a statement released on Monday, January 6, IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan revealed that Akinyi was killed on January 4 at her home in Kisauni, Mombasa.
Marjan disclosed that the deceased was attacked alongside her son, who sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
“Reports received by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) indicate that Ms. Aisha was murdered on the night of January 4, 2025, at her house in Utange, Kisauni Constituency, Mombasa County. She was attacked alongside her son, who sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment.
“The IEBC fraternity is deeply saddened by her death and extends its heartfelt condolences to Ms. Aisha’s family, friends, and colleagues for the tragic loss. The IEBC assures the family and friends that it will stand with them during this period of profound sorrow,” Marjan stated.
The IEBC CEO urged investigative agencies to expedite the probe into Akinyi’s death and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“The Commission is deeply troubled by this heinous incident and strongly condemns those behind Ms. Aisha’s murder. As we condole with her family, we call on the country’s security agencies to speedily investigate this horrific occurrence and apprehend her killers,” Marjan remarked.
The late Akinyi joined the IEBC in 2012 as a Constituency Elections Coordinator for Nyali and was first deployed to Kilifi South. She later rose to the position of Acting County Elections Manager for Kilifi County.
“Ms. Aisha was a highly trained officer who carried out her duties with the utmost honesty, integrity, and dedication,” Marjan added.
