Baringo County has been plunged into mourning following the untimely death of its Senator, William Cheptumo, who succumbed to liver cancer on Sunday, February 16. The veteran politician, who previously served as Baringo North MP for three terms before being elected senator in 2022, was eulogized as a selfless and dedicated leader.
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Cheptumo as “a progressive leader who was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo.” He extended his condolences to the late senator’s family and the people of Baringo, calling his passing a great loss to the country.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hailed Cheptumo as a dignified statesman, saying, “He will be remembered as a leader who chose his words carefully in both public and private conversations, always exuding professionalism and calmness. His representation of Baringo was of the highest quality.”
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who served alongside Cheptumo in the 12th Parliament, described him as “a brilliant legislator and a sharp legal mind,” noting that his contributions to the legal and political landscape of Kenya will not be forgotten.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi expressed his deep sorrow, calling Cheptumo “a firm believer in devolution who tirelessly articulated the interests of Baringo and Kenyans at large.” He noted that the senator’s dedication to public service was unmatched.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula echoed similar sentiments, remembering him as “a leader, mentor, and friend to many, who carried the dreams and hopes of his people with dignity and unwavering commitment.”
