The Scrap Metal Council (SMC) has announced the automation of the permit application process for importing and exporting scrap metal consignments.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 11, SMC confirmed that the new system will officially go live on Saturday, March 15, marking a significant step in streamlining the regulation of the scrap metal trade.
“The Scrap Metal Council (SMC), in collaboration with the Kenya Trade Network Agency (KenTrade), wishes to notify all our stakeholders of the automation of Imports/Exports processes of Scrap Metal Consignments effective Saturday, March 15, 2025,” the statement read.
According to SMC, the initiative is designed to improve efficiency in the sector, enhance transparency, and curb illegal trade in scrap metal.
“The automation is designed to ensure smooth and efficient cross-border scrap metal trading. Upon registration and licensing by the Scrap Metal Council, dealers shall be required to apply for Export/Import permits through the Trade Facilitation Platform,” SMC stated.
To support the transition, KenTrade will offer refresher training on the automated system and clearance protocols.
“Refresher training on the automated processes and clearance protocols on the Trade Facilitation Platform will be conducted by KenTrade upon request via email or call,” the statement added.
SMC encouraged stakeholders interested in training to contact KenTrade via [email protected] or call +254 709-950-000 / +254-20-496 5000 for assistance.
