Government Retains Maize Seed Prices for 2025 to Support Farmers

Date:

In a significant move to support the country’s agricultural sector and ensure food security, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has announced that maize seed prices will remain unchanged for the 2025 long rains planting season.

The decision follows numerous appeals from farmers across the nation who had expressed concerns over potential price hikes for maize seeds. After consulting with key institutions and government bodies, the Ministry concluded that maintaining last year’s prices would be essential to alleviating farmers’ financial burdens and stabilizing the country’s food production.

In an official letter dated 25th February 2025 and addressed to Mr. Sammy K. Chepsiror, Managing Director of Kenya Seed Company, the Ministry directed that the prices for maize seeds remain the same as those of the 2024 planting season. The pricing structure is as follows:

  • 1 kg maize seed: Kshs 210
  • 2 kg maize seed: Kshs 420
  • 10 kg maize seed: Kshs 2,100
  • 25 kg maize seed: Kshs 5,250

The Ministry emphasized that this decision takes effect immediately and called on all relevant stakeholders to disseminate this information promptly to seed producers, distributors, farmers, and the general public.

This price retention comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to enhance food security and support smallholder farmers, who form the backbone of the nation’s agricultural output. By keeping maize seed prices stable, the Ministry aims to encourage increased planting and productivity for the 2025 season.

Farmers and agricultural organizations have welcomed the announcement, noting that stable input costs will help them plan better and reduce the overall cost of maize production.

As the planting season approaches, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development continues to collaborate closely with seed companies and agricultural stakeholders to ensure the timely availability and accessibility of quality seeds across the country.
