The government has issued flood alerts for the North Eastern, South Eastern, Coast, Central, and South Rift Valley regions, warning of anticipated storms over the weekend. The storms are expected to subside early next week, according to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
In a statement, the ministry reported that counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and North Western regions had experienced heavy rainfall over the past week, resulting in isolated cases of flooding.
“Evacuation is ongoing in areas such as Kapuothe, Nanga, Lower Katuoro, Wigwa, and parts of Dunga in Kisumu Central Sub-county, where approximately 200 households have been affected, and around 100 acres of crops have been destroyed by the floods,” the statement read.
It further detailed that 47 households are currently being hosted at Nanga Primary School, receiving humanitarian aid from the State Department for Special Programmes, Red Cross, and other agencies.
“In Kisumu East Sub-county, 140 households have been affected by the floods. The impacted villages include Onjweru, Kanyawade, Kaloo, Kodie, Awuor Ajwang’, Kodeyo, Alara, Kowuore, Kabuong Kanyawade, Kamiendi, and parts of Kachola,” the ministry added.
Disaster response teams, coordinated by National Government Administration officers, are actively monitoring the situation and offering support to affected residents. The ministry also urged individuals in flood-prone areas to cooperate with evacuation efforts for their safety.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall across various parts of the country for the next five days.
Kenya Met Director General David Gikungu announced that rainfall would persist over regions including the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coastal region, North-western, and North-eastern Kenya.
Gikungu highlighted that isolated heavy rainfall events, accompanied by occasional thunderstorms, are likely during the first half of the forecast period, with the distribution of rainfall expected to remain intense.
Residents in affected regions are advised to stay vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities and disaster response teams.
