FKF President Hussein Mohammed and Macdonald Mariga in Marrakech for a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed confidence in the newly elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leadership under President Hussein Mohammed, affirming his belief in their potential to advance the sport in Kenya.

Infantino met Hussein and FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga during the CAF Awards ceremony held on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco.

In a statement, the FIFA boss praised Hussein’s election victory, describing him as a seasoned football administrator capable of steering Kenyan football to greater heights.

“I congratulate President Mohammed on his recent election and assure mine and FIFA’s support as he takes on the challenge of building Kenyan football. His love for the game and extensive experience in football administration will enable him and his team to elevate the sport,” Infantino wrote on Instagram.

Hussein, the CEO of Extreme Sports, was elected FKF president two weeks ago after securing 67 votes in the second round of the election. His closest rival, former FKF Vice President Doris Petra, garnered 31 votes in the first round, forcing a runoff as neither candidate achieved the required 50 percent threshold.

Infantino pledged to collaborate closely with Hussein’s administration, particularly in strengthening the game’s infrastructure and governance.

Infantino commended Kenya’s plans to build a technical centre in Machakos, which is set to bolster football development. The Machakos County government leased 20 acres of land to FKF for the construction of the facility, estimated to cost Ksh600 million. The lease period is set at 33 years.

“With plans for a new technical centre in Machakos and strong Football Kenya Federation participation in FIFA programs, notably in women’s football, Kenya’s determination to grow the sport on and off the pitch is evident,” noted Infantino.

Hussein shared details of his discussions with Infantino, highlighting their focus on governance, infrastructure development, and the promotion of women’s football.

“Met FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Marrakech yesterday. We discussed governance, infrastructure, and growing Kenyan football, including women’s football. FIFA and FKF are planning a technical centre in Kenya, a key step in strengthening the game. Excited about what lies ahead,” Hussein posted on his X account.

With FIFA’s backing and a focus on enhancing infrastructure and governance, the new FKF regime under Hussein is set to lay the groundwork for sustainable growth in Kenyan football, ensuring progress across all levels of the sport.
