The Kenya Meteorological Department has projected that rainfall will persist across most parts of the country over the next seven days, with isolated heavy showers expected in some areas, including Nairobi.
In its weekly forecast released on Monday, covering Tuesday, March 18, to Monday, March 24, the department indicated that parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, will experience morning rains and occasional night showers.
The affected counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi.
The report noted that rainfall will be more widespread between Tuesday and Thursday before gradually decreasing. “Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places during the first half of the forecast period, reducing to a few places thereafter,” the Met Department stated.
Temperatures in Nairobi are expected to reach highs of 28°C, with lows of 12°C. Thika will experience maximum temperatures of 30°C, while night temperatures will drop to 15°C.
Counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley—including Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok—are also expected to receive rainfall throughout the week.
Morning rains will occur in some areas, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms expected between Tuesday and Friday. Light showers are also projected to continue at night in a few locations.
In the southeastern lowlands—including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta—as well as inland parts of Tana River County, morning, afternoon, and night showers are expected. Some areas will also experience thunderstorms.
Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, will see continuous rainfall, with showers occurring throughout the day.
Residents of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo should prepare for morning rains, afternoon showers, and occasional thunderstorms, particularly between Tuesday and Friday.
Despite the wet conditions, daytime temperatures will remain high, with most areas in the Coast, northeastern, and northwestern Kenya experiencing maximum temperatures exceeding 30°C.
