Eight KCSE candidates faint after gas leaks at Makande Girls Secondary School in Mombasa.

Eight Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates in Makande Girls Secondary School in Mombasa County were rushed to hospital following a gas leak at the institution. 

Confirming the Thursday morning, November 7, incident, Mombasa County Chief Fire Officer Ibrahim Basafar disclosed that the incident was reported at around 7:15 a.m.

“It was around 7:15 a.m. when we received a distress call that there was a gas that had been detected at Makande Girls Secondary School and we activated our teams. We activated firefighters and rescue teams,” Basafar Noted.

According to Basafar, a multi-agency response team quickly arrived on-site, and while initial gas levels were high, the situation has now been contained.

 “The amount of gas has reduced and is no longer dangerous to anyone,” he said, adding that security officials have cordoned off the affected area to ensure safety.

Basafar also added that five of the students were taken to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital. Investigation is underway to determine the cause of the gas leak, with Basafar affirming that any parties responsible for the incident will be held accountable.

“We will investigate, and once the culprit is identified, action will be taken. Fortunately, the area is now safe, though it is unfortunate that this happened during exams. We are truly sorry for the disruption,” he stated.
