East African football legends to lead CHAN 2025 draw

Date:

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that football legends from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will preside over the draws for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Nairobi, ahead of the tournament’s kickoff from February 1 to 28.

Kenyan icon McDonald Mariga, Uganda’s Hassan Wasswa, and Tanzania’s Mrisho Ngasa will lead the draw for the tournament’s eighth edition. Their selection honors their remarkable contributions to African football. Mariga, the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League, won the title with Inter Milan alongside other domestic trophies and earned 40 caps for Kenya.

Wasswa, with 75 caps for Uganda, had a stellar career spanning over a decade, including stints in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Ngasa, Tanzania’s all-time leading scorer with 25 goals in over 100 appearances, remains one of East Africa’s most celebrated players.

CAF’s decision to spotlight these legends underscores their influence in the sport and aims to inspire the next generation as the region hosts the prestigious championship.
