In a phone call with president Ruto, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken commended Kenyan President William Ruto for Kenya’s leadership of the Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti.
Secretary Blinken expressed gratitude for Kenya’s commitment to restoring stability and security for the Haitian people, affirming Kenya’s pivotal role on the global stage.
“Kenya’s dedication to peace and security beyond its borders is commendable, and we are grateful for its leadership in supporting the people of Haiti during these challenging times,” Blinken said, according to a statement released by Spokesperson Matthew Miller.
The two leaders also discussed ongoing peace efforts in Africa, specifically the Tumaini Peace Initiative—a series of talks aimed at securing lasting peace in South Sudan. Blinken emphasized the importance of South Sudanese leaders fully engaging in the Nairobi-led initiative, with the goal of establishing a sustainable peace process.
“We urge South Sudanese leaders to seize this opportunity for the sake of a peaceful and stable future for their people,” Blinken added.
In addition to discussing peace efforts in South Sudan, the two leaders spoke about the urgent humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Blinken and Ruto explored ways to increase coordinated efforts to expand humanitarian access, halt the ongoing conflict, and facilitate a process for the return of civilian governance. “It is essential to restore peace in Sudan and ensure that civilians are protected. Our nations are committed to pressing for humanitarian access and a return to civilian leadership,” Blinken said.
The call also touched on recent developments within Kenya, where Blinken underscored the need for the continued engagement with the Kenyan public, particularly youth and civil society groups, following protests held between June and August. Blinken called for accountability for alleged instances of protest-related violence and reports of abductions. “We stress the importance of accountability for all actions taken against peaceful protestors,” Blinken stated, reinforcing the U.S.’s stance on human rights and democratic values.
Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the strong ties between the United States and Kenya, expressing continued support for Kenya’s democratic future. “The bond between our nations is based on shared values and mutual respect, and we are committed to supporting Kenya’s progress toward an inclusive and democratic society,” he said.
