Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced the introduction of a mid-year Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination series aimed at candidates wishing to retake or missed their exams.

Speaking on Thursday, January 9, during the release of the 2024 KCSE results at Mitihani House in Nairobi, Ogamba explained that the new series, to be administered in July each year, will cater to students who may have missed the main examination due to illness or unforeseen circumstances.

“The government has continued to enhance measures to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the administration of national examinations. Following extensive stakeholder consultations, I am pleased to announce that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will introduce a mid-year series of the KCSE examinations, starting this year.

“The examination will target candidates wishing to retake the KCSE exam as well as those who missed it due to sickness or other unexpected hardships,” Ogamba stated.

He further revealed that from 2025, adult candidates would also be eligible to register for the mid-year examination series.

Meanwhile, KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere announced that the last KCSE examinations will be administered in 2027 as part of the education system’s ongoing transition. He urged candidates who wish to retake their exams, whether fully or partially, to take advantage of the remaining opportunities.

“I wish to remind the public that the last KCSE examination will be administered in 2027. Anyone intending to repeat their exams should plan accordingly,” Njengere emphasized.

In addition, Njengere disclosed upcoming timelines for registration, with the 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) registration opening on January 27. Registration for the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) and KCSE candidates will commence on February 17.

These measures are part of the ministry’s broader reforms to enhance accessibility and inclusivity in Kenya’s education system.
