Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has broken his silence on the controversial death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody, assuring the public and the grieving family that the Government will leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of justice.
Addressing the Senate in a solemn statement, Murkomen conveyed deep personal sympathy to the family of the deceased, noting that beyond his official role, he also speaks as a father and citizen disturbed by the loss of life in the hands of state agents.
“To his father and mother, his wife and child, I say pole sana,” Murkomen said. “The Government will expend every effort and every resource to ensure that justice is served to them for this troubling death of their loved one.”
Albert Ojwang’s death has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny on police conduct in Kenya, with rights groups calling for immediate and transparent investigations.
Murkomen emphasized that while his role as Cabinet Secretary is limited to policy oversight under Article 245(4) of the Constitution, he expects the office of the Inspector General of Police to deliver full accountability. He also reaffirmed his confidence in the investigative institutions involved.
“Our constitution is very robust, and I have full confidence that the National Police Service, working in close collaboration with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), will resolve this matter,” he added.
The CS’s remarks follow mounting pressure on the Government to tackle police brutality and extrajudicial killings, which have plagued the country for years despite numerous reform pledges.
The Senate is expected to follow up on the case with further hearings, even as IPOA begins a parallel probe. Murkomen’s assurance is seen as a significant test of the Ruto administration’s commitment to police accountability and human rights protections.
