Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen While appearing before the Senate

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has been summoned to appear before the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 25, as public outrage grows over the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula issued the directive on Wednesday, June 18, during a heated session in which several legislators questioned the government’s commitment to justice and police reform.

MPs Eve Obara (Kabondo Kasipul), Gitonga Mukunji (Manyatta), and Otiende Amollo (Rarieda) led the criticism, accusing Murkomen of failing to hold top security officials accountable for ongoing abuses.

“This House must lend its strong voice to matters we disapprove of, especially regarding the conduct of officers entrusted with protecting wananchi,” Wetang’ula declared. “I direct the Minister for Internal Security to appear before this House on Wednesday afternoon to respond to the raised concerns.”

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo was particularly scathing, arguing that expecting Murkomen to provide meaningful answers would be futile, given that the CS relies on the same officers who claimed Ojwang died by suicide.

“I would suggest that to ask our colleague to bring better answers is to ask him for a task that is beyond him,” Amollo stated.

He proposed the formation of an ad hoc parliamentary committee to independently probe the death of the blogger and disband upon completing its mandate.

However, Speaker Wetang’ula dismissed the idea, noting that forming such a committee would require a motion, potentially delaying the immediate accountability that lawmakers are demanding from the Interior Ministry.

The death of Albert Ojwang, a social media influencer who reportedly died while in police custody, has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed calls for police accountability and reforms within the security sector.
