CS Chirchir reveals details of Nairobi’s high-tech traffic management plan

Date:

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has announced that the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Samsung have signed an agreement to implement Nairobi’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

In a statement dated Wednesday, September 27, Chirchir confirmed that the agreement would enable the rollout of the first phase of a road project targeting 25 junctions across the city.

As part of the initiative, several junctions will undergo improvements, with advanced technological systems being installed to enhance traffic management.

The installations will include traffic signals, signal controllers, CCTV cameras, and above-ground detectors. Other components, such as Variable Message Signs (VMS), Vehicle Enforcement Systems (VES), and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS), will also be integrated into the targeted junctions.

“This phase includes the geometric improvement of 25 junctions,” the statement read in part.

“The project involves detailed design and upgrades to the junction configurations to ensure they can adequately handle traffic demand. This comprehensive upgrade will greatly improve traffic flow and safety in our city.”

Some of the junctions earmarked for improvement include Moi Avenue-Kenyatta Avenue, Koinange-Kenyatta Avenue, and Mbagathi Way-Langata Road.

Additionally, Chirchir announced plans to construct a Traffic Management Centre at Cabanas, Mombasa Road. Construction works are expected to commence in March 2025.
