The Commission for University Education (CUE) has issued a warning to Kenyans regarding degrees and honorary doctorates conferred by Northwestern Christian University.
In a statement released on Tuesday, December 24, CUE clarified that the institution is not accredited and any credentials it offers are not recognized in Kenya.
“The Commission has taken note of widely circulating media reports on purported issuance of honorary doctorates in Kenya by an entity going by the name Northwestern Christian University.
“The Commission wishes to inform the public that the entity operating in Kenya by the name Northwestern Christian University is an unaccredited institution. This fact was brought to the public’s attention in a newspaper advert published in June 2023. It was explicitly stated that the institution was not accredited to offer any university education in Kenya and that any purported credentials issued would not be recognized in the country,” stated CUE CEO Prof. Mike Kuria.
Prof. Kuria further revealed that CUE is investigating the circumstances surrounding the awarding of degrees by Northwestern Christian University. Legal measures will be taken where applicable.
“The Commission shall thereafter take appropriate legal measures where applicable against Northwestern Christian University. Following this, the Commission advises members of the public that the list of accredited universities and the programs they offer can be accessed through https://cue.or.ke/index.php/status-of-universities or through direct consultation,” he added.
The statement comes after Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management from Northwestern Christian University.
While expressing gratitude for the recognition in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, December 21, Sudi highlighted the significance of education.
“I am deeply honoured to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management from Northwestern Christian University at The Eldoret National Polytechnic. This recognition underscores the limitless nature of education—it truly has no limits,” Sudi stated.
CUE’s caution serves as a reminder for Kenyans to verify the accreditation status of institutions before accepting or pursuing academic credentials.
