Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks with Kenyan President William Ruto in Beijing on Thursday, where the two nations agreed to elevate their relationship to a “China-Kenya community with a shared future for the new era.”

Describing the decision as a strategic and timely move, President Xi said it aligns with the historical trajectory and current global trends. He noted that China is ready to collaborate closely with Kenya to set an example of all-weather cooperation within the broader China-Africa partnership and to strengthen solidarity among Global South nations.

Xi emphasized the importance of mutual support between the two countries, particularly in defending national sovereignty, security, and development interests. He also called for enhanced exchanges on governance, deeper policy coordination, and greater connectivity.

Highlighting the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi encouraged more Chinese firms to invest in Kenya, stressing that China’s vast market remains open to Kenyan goods. He underscored the need to promote sustainable trade and explore diverse financial cooperation models.

“As key members of the Global South, China and Kenya should jointly uphold the UN-centered international system, advance shared governance principles, and practice genuine multilateralism,” Xi stated.

Xi also reaffirmed China’s commitment to delivering tangible outcomes from the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), pledging to continue supporting Africa’s development.

On global economic challenges, Xi warned against trade wars and tariffs, saying there are no winners in such disputes. He reiterated China’s readiness to work with all countries in safeguarding fair international trade practices and promoting justice through collaboration.

In his remarks, President Ruto hailed the strong bond between Kenya and China, describing it as an “all-weather strategic cooperative partnership” rooted in mutual benefit. He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to the one-China policy and recognized Taiwan as an integral part of China.

Ruto expressed appreciation for China’s continued support, particularly in infrastructure and disaster response. He praised the Belt and Road projects, including the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, for significantly boosting Kenya’s development.

“Kenya is committed to building a community with a shared future with China, deepening cooperation in trade, investment, science and technology, and enhancing cultural and educational exchanges,” Ruto said.

He added that Africa-China cooperation plays a vital role in supporting the continent’s peaceful development. Ruto also lauded China’s stabilizing influence amid global tensions and its defense of Global South nations’ interests.

Following the talks, Presidents Xi and Ruto witnessed the signing of 20 cooperation agreements covering areas such as the Belt and Road Initiative, high technology, cultural exchange, trade, and media collaboration.

The two countries also issued a joint statement outlining their commitment to building a model of cooperation under the all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future.

Earlier in the day, President Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan hosted a welcoming ceremony for President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto at the Great Hall of the People, followed by a state banquet in their honor.
