Embattled car dealer Khalif Kairo has revealed that his WeFunder campaign account was abruptly shut down just 24 hours after it was launched. The account had already raised over KSh12.9 million (USD 100,000) in pledges before its closure.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, January 29, Kairo attributed the shutdown to his ongoing legal battles, including a court case at the High Court of Kenya, Milimani Division, in Nairobi.

“I am currently at the Milimani Law Courts for plea-taking. Due to these legal challenges, our WeFunder campaign account was shut down last night after surpassing the USD 100,000 (KSh12.9 million) mark,” Kairo stated.

The account had been active for only a day before the closure. However, independent verification of the closure remained difficult due to privacy laws governing financial accounts.

Kairo has been entangled in multiple court cases over disputed car sales, with legal issues piling up over the last few months. His brand and business operations have been significantly impacted, leading to the closure of his offices.

“We have tried everything possible to resolve these disputes amicably and complete pending deliveries. However, constant police involvement and negative media coverage have made things worse, affecting our ability to operate. All our offices remain closed,” he explained.

Despite these setbacks, Kairo defended his decade-long career in the car dealership industry, insisting that he had successfully facilitated thousands of car sales without any prior criminal charges related to fraud.

“I have been in business for ten years with no criminal record related to car sales. Many people have successfully purchased vehicles from me,” he added.

Kairo is expected in court today following his latest arrest on Tuesday, January 28. He was reportedly picked up by plain-clothed officers shortly after attending another hearing at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.

Known for his flashy marketing tactics and strong social media presence, Kairo has built a reputation as one of Kenya’s most recognizable car dealers. However, his legal troubles now threaten to overshadow his once-thriving business.
