Airtel Kenya has introduced a new Progressive Web App (PWA) called Airtel Lite, designed to provide a lightweight and faster self-care experience for users.

In an announcement on February 10, the telecom company revealed that customers would be able to access Airtel Lite without using any mobile data.

Much like the My Airtel app, Airtel Lite allows users to access essential services offline without requiring data bundles. The company noted that the app aims to enhance user engagement by offering a seamless and cost-effective digital experience.

“With more smartphone users prioritizing data conservation while still relying on USSD services, Airtel Lite will revolutionize how customers interact with Airtel’s offerings,” the company stated.

The app shares many functionalities with the My Airtel self-care app but is specifically designed for smartphones with limited storage and processing power.

“Storage space is a major concern for smartphone users, and Airtel Lite eliminates this issue by requiring no additional storage on mobile devices,” Airtel added.

One of the app’s standout features is its fast-loading interface, which ensures users can quickly access essential services without waiting for large amounts of data to load.

Airtel Lite enables users to perform various transactions, including balance inquiries, recharging, purchasing bundles, sending money, making payments, and viewing transaction history.

The Motivation Behind Airtel Lite

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Kenya Managing Director Ashish Malhotra stated that the company is committed to addressing customer challenges through innovative digital solutions.

“Our research has shown that many smartphone users in Kenya struggle with limited storage and high data costs. Airtel Lite is our way of eliminating these challenges and ensuring that everyone can access our services with ease,” Malhotra said.

Airtel emphasized that as Kenya advances toward full digitization, solutions like Airtel Lite are critical in promoting the adoption of digital services. The company highlighted that Airtel Lite serves as an essential tool for users transitioning from USSD-based interactions to more dynamic digital services.

Beyond convenience, Airtel pointed out that the app plays a crucial role in enhancing financial inclusion by offering a simple gateway to mobile banking and digital transactions, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

“Airtel Lite is about empowering our customers digitally. By ensuring that every user, regardless of their device, can access our services, we are taking an important step in driving Kenya’s digital transformation,” Malhotra added.

Airtel Lite is now accessible to all Airtel Kenya subscribers, who can start using it by visiting https://lite.airtelkenya.com through their mobile browsers.
