The Rev. Canon Jonathan Kabiru was elected as the Bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Nairobi Diocese on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

The election took place at ACK St. Stephen’s Cathedral on Jogoo Road, where 23 delegates from across the diocese gathered to select their new leader. Canon Kabiru now becomes the third bishop in the history of the Nairobi Diocese, following the retirement of Bishop Joel Waweru.

Prior to his election, Canon Kabiru served as an archdeacon within the ACK, a role that entrusted him with significant spiritual and administrative responsibilities. His election is expected to usher in a new era of leadership and vision for the Nairobi Diocese, focusing on both spiritual growth and addressing contemporary social challenges within the Anglican community.

Speaking about his role, the Rev. Canon Kabiru expressed gratitude and commitment to continuing the diocese’s mission of spiritual guidance, community service, and social justice.

As the head of the Nairobi Diocese, the bishop holds a pivotal role in providing spiritual oversight, guiding clergy, and managing the diocese’s administrative affairs. The bishop also serves as a key figure in addressing societal issues while fostering unity among congregations.

Canon Kabiru’s election underscores his exemplary leadership qualities, as he has been a prominent figure in the church’s hierarchy. As an archdeacon, he oversaw multiple parishes and clergy, providing support and ensuring that church activities aligned with ACK’s mission and values. Archdeacons also act as intermediaries between bishops and local congregations, a role Canon Kabiru executed with diligence and commitment.
