Governor Barasa Issues Update on Kisumu-Kakamega Road Accident that Claimed 10 Lives

At least 10 people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident near Iguhu Yala Bridge along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road.

In a statement on Wednesday, November 13, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished them strength during this difficult time.

“On my own behalf and on behalf of the County Government of Kakamega, I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray that God grants them the strength to bear this profound loss. I also wish a swift recovery to those hospitalized following the accident,” the statement read.

According to Barasa, seven people died at the scene, two succumbed while undergoing resuscitation, and another was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

“This tragic accident involved two 14-seater public service vehicles headed toward Kisumu and an oncoming trailer. Seven individuals lost their lives at the scene, two passed away while undergoing resuscitation at Iguhu Level 4 Hospital, and one was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kakamega General Hospital,” the statement continued.

Following the accident, which involved a fuel tanker and two matatus, Barasa reported that 12 casualties are currently receiving treatment at Iguhu Hospital. Additionally, nine critically injured patients have been transferred to Kakamega County General Hospital for specialized care.

“We have mobilized our doctors and emergency teams, who are working tirelessly to provide necessary treatment and care to the injured. As we approach the holiday season, I urge all road users, especially drivers, to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic rules to prevent further tragedies,” Barasa added.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a full recovery to the survivors.

“To those injured and currently receiving care in hospitals, I wish you a swift and complete recovery. May the coming days bring healing and peace. I commend Governor Barasa’s prompt action in facilitating the evacuation of victims to medical facilities. It is encouraging to see Kakamega health officials mobilizing resources to save lives during this crisis,” the MP stated.
