Last week an old video of former Gichugu MP and running mate to ODM’s Raila Odinga in in the 2022 General Election Martha Karua resurfaced trending in the social media.
Martha Karua was talking about some 1969 illegal oath administered to members of her community in the larger Mt Kenya Region.
In the video Karua is making a confession of an open secret well known to Kenyans about the leadership of this great nation Kenya.
She says all community members swore never to allow the leadership of Kenya go beyond Mt Kenya.
This video is a stark reminder to the deep seated ethnic divisions that have threatened to tear our country Kenya with recurrent violence during every election season.
The robbery with violence Saba Saba riots witnessed in Mt Kenya yesterday is a manifestation of Gikuyu supremacy problem disguised as a Gen-Z uprising and demonstrations.
The 1969 oath-taking inform this year’s Saba Saba deadly riots concentrated in Mt Kenya counties in Kiambu, Nyeri, Muranga, Naivasha, Meru among others.
Nairobi CBD largely remained peaceful except for some outskirts including Kangemi and Kitengela mainly harboured by Mt Kenya people.
Whilst the most parts of the country remained peaceful with Kisumu’s Kondele reminiscent of a fountain of peace, Mt Kenya realised massive violence with robbery and destruction of property.
The region provided the bulk of 16 counties where violence was reported.
In Nyeri there were massive looting of supermarkets including Naivas and other SME businesses.
Muranga saw not only theft but arson where a supermarket by the name of Magunas.
This senseless looting saw the Military deployed in Naivasha to reinstate sanity on the roads.
Police battles with criminal gangs ended up with 10 deaths and 25 critical injuries according to the Kenya Human Rights initial reports.
In Nairobi alone, Sh 10 billion in business was lost due to shut down as businesses closed in fear of potential looting and violence.
Mt Kenya must have lost something in the tune of Sh 200 Billion in theft, looting and wanton destruction.
This unfortunate turn of events begs one question: was this really Saba Saba as it were? Was the commemoration of those lost during Saba Saba be through looting and mayhem? How come the previous commemorations were peaceful and countrywide mainly by prayers in Churches?
In the past commemorative events, the focus was at the Kamukunji Grounds where speeches were made and the masses walked back peacefully to their homes.
It is not lost on Kenyans that during Kibaki and Uhuru regimes, this was the order of the day where Nairobi was the only country hosting a public rally for Saba Saba memorial.
Suddenly, in President Ruto’s reign there is an upsurge of the public meetings and curiously only in Mt Kenya.
Would one be wrong to suggest that as long Kenya’s Presidency is outside Mt Kenya, the 1969 oath is put to bear? The oaths that committed the Kikuyu not to allow the Mera (Luo) or other communities ever to take power?
Why is it that during the 20 years when the country was led by a person from Mt Kenya, Saba Saba memorials remained peaceful?
Were the deadly riots part of a conspiracy to have a civilian coup against a democratically elected President of the Republic of Kenya?
Are these the extension of the aborted coup d’état of 25 June 2024 where goons breached the hallowed house of Parliament and failed attempt to attack State House?
Whilst the Constitution allows for peaceable demonstrations, this cannot be infiltrated by criminals to kill and loot.
Kenyans must come out to defend our freedom and which must be practiced within the Law.
The police must remain steadfast to defend and protect Kenyans from terror and coup plotters.
The 2021 Constitution provided for term limits of two with each having five years. Anyone who wants to come to power must wait for the ballot in 2027 and seek people’s mandate in a well laid out Constitutional framework.
