Moi University Triumphs at Inaugural Supreme Court Moot Court Competition

Moi University emerged victorious in the inaugural Supreme Court Moot Court Competition, an event showcasing top legal minds from 16 law schools across the country. The highly anticipated competition, which concluded during the Supreme Court at 12 Conference and Exhibition, recognized outstanding talent and dedication among Kenya’s law students.

“This competition is an excellent platform for students to be mentored by judges and other legal members of the Supreme Court. Every year, I admit many young lawyers to the bar,” Chief Justice, Martha Koome.

Moi University was awarded the top prize in the competition, with the University of Nairobi and Africa Nazarene University securing the first and second runners-up positions, respectively.
In a notable achievement, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) was recognized for having the Best Applicant and Respondent Memorials, highlighting the institution’s meticulous preparation and legal insight.
Individual awards were also given to top oralists, with Winjoy Gitonga from Moi University honored as the Best Female Oralist and Marvis Ndubi recognized as the Best Male Oralist. Their eloquence, mastery of legal principles, and persuasive skills distinguished them from their peers, reinforcing their reputations as future leaders in the legal profession.

Law students from 16 universities across the country on Saturday November,2 participated in the finals of the Moot Court competition.
The competition was part of the celebrations organised to celebrate 12 years of Kenya’s Supreme Court.
It was being held before the judges of the court led by Chief Justice Martha Koome with finalists having the opportunity to give their final submissions.
They analyse a problem, research the relevant law, prepare written submissions, and present oral arguments.
The bench consisting of Justices Mohammed Ibrahim, Smokin Wanjala, Isaac Lenaola and William Ouko will later retreat to decide the winner.

This is the first time law students are appearing before the Supreme Court.

“The purpose is to mentor and inspire the next generation of advocates,” Judiciary said in a statement.

Speaking during the launch, Koome said the competition is an important opportunity for participants and law schools to reflect on the rich jurisprudence that the Supreme Court has developed in the last decade.

Participation in the competition is aimed at providing law students with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Supreme Court’s rich jurisprudence.
