Kenya Railways has unveiled revised travel arrangements for passengers who were left stranded following the abrupt cancellation of the Madaraka Express night train from Mombasa to Nairobi on Sunday, July 6.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 7, the corporation urged affected passengers to report to the Mombasa Terminus by 8:00 a.m. for alternative travel arrangements. The operator confirmed that all tickets dated July 6 would remain valid for boarding.
“We have worked on a mechanism to transport all affected passengers, including those who missed the earlier train,” Kenya Railways stated. “Affected passengers are therefore advised to report to the Mombasa Terminus on 7th July 2025 by 8 a.m. for travel. Tickets dated 6th July 2025 will be deemed valid.”
Technical Glitch to Blame
The railway agency attributed the cancellation of the 10:00 p.m. Sunday night train to a technical hitch, which it assured was being addressed.
“We wish to reiterate that the train suspension was due to a technical hitch and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” the statement added. “Thank you for your patience and understanding. Kenya Railways prioritizes your safety and comfort.”
Chaos and Frustration
The cancellation caused widespread disruption and anger, with hundreds of travelers left stranded at the coast. Many took to social media to express frustration over the short notice and lack of immediate alternatives.
Earlier on Sunday, additional disruptions were reported after passengers traveling from Kwale County were delayed by a police roadblock at the Dongo Kundu bypass, causing them to miss the 2:00 p.m. train.
The cancellation comes amid increased demand for rail travel ahead of Saba Saba commemorations and ongoing nationwide protests, raising further concerns about logistics and passenger safety.
Kenya Railways has suspended at least four train services in recent weeks, including night trips, citing operational and safety concerns.
