Several roads in Nairobi will be temporarily closed this weekend to facilitate the Nairobi City Marathon, with the Nairobi Expressway among the key routes affected.
According to the event organizers, the Expressway will be closed from 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, to allow for smooth coordination of the race.
On Waiyaki Way, the inner lanes between Musa Gitau Road and the Expressway entrance will also be off-limits to motorists from midnight to 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Several other roads will be impacted as well, including:
- Mombasa Road: All entries and exits at roundabouts heading toward the city will be closed.
- Uhuru Highway
- Kenyatta Avenue (around PanAfric Hotel and Uhuru Gardens)
- University Way
- Haile Selassie Avenue
- Areas near Capital Centre, Kapiti Road, and Popo Road
To assist motorists and participants, a detailed map of the closed roads has been shared by the marathon organizers.

The marathon is being hosted in collaboration with key partners including Athletics Kenya, Moja Expressway, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This year’s edition emphasizes safety, sustainability, and clean air.
According to the organizers, SEI has installed over nine real-time air quality sensors along the race route to monitor pollution levels and the runners’ exposure during the event.
“These sensors are silently at work, collecting critical data to assess pollutant levels and ensure a safer racing environment for athletes,” read a blog post by the event’s team.
