Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cautioned Kenyans against resorting to unconstitutional means to oust President William Ruto, urging them to wait for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking candidly, Gachagua acknowledged the widespread discontent with the current administration, which he attributed to what many view as exploitative policies. However, he insisted that only the ballot could lawfully end Ruto’s tenure.

“If he chooses to resign voluntarily, well and good,” Gachagua said, “but I will not support any extralegal efforts to remove him from office.”

Despite his opposition to Ruto’s administration, the DCP party leader emphasized his commitment to the constitution and the rule of law. Drawing on Kenya’s past political struggles, Gachagua reminded citizens of their resilience during previous regimes.

“Kenyans endured colonial oppression for years. They also lived through twenty-four years of Moi’s repression. Surely, they can survive two more years of this regime and vote it out,” he stated.

Gachagua has openly declared his ambition to ensure President Ruto serves only one term, and is currently working with a coalition of opposition figures including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa, PLP’s Martha Karua, former Attorney General Justin Muturi, and ex-Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

Meanwhile, President Ruto remains defiant in the face of growing opposition. Speaking on Friday, June 27, the Head of State dismissed calls for his resignation, challenging his critics to provide viable alternatives.

“If it is ‘Ruto must go,’ then tell me how you want me to go. What do you mean by that? Present a better plan and convince Kenyans,” Ruto said.

The president argued that criticism without policy alternatives is unproductive.

“You cannot replace a plan you don’t like with no plan at all. All you have is hate and violence. And you expect Kenyans to agree with you? There are very few fools in Kenya,” he added.
