Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled modern, high-capacity litter bins across the city’s central business district (CBD) in a renewed effort to improve cleanliness and urban hygiene.

The newly installed Glasdon Jubilee 110-litre bins are made of Durapol, a tamper-resistant and heat-resistant material, and feature a domed top to prevent rainwater collection. They also include a secure three-point locking system to restrict unauthorised access.

According to the county, the bins are part of a wider environmental management programme aimed at restoring order and cleanliness in the capital. Governor Sakaja personally inspected the installations on Friday, June 6.

“These are not just bins. They’re a statement about the Nairobi we’re building — one that values order, hygiene, and modernity,” Sakaja stated. “We’re investing in modern infrastructure, but real change will come when wananchi also take responsibility and dispose of their waste properly.”

The exercise began on Sunday, May 18, led by Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Mosiria. The bins are replacing older, smaller units that had previously been removed from the streets.

To address persistent challenges such as unauthorised advertising, the bins are coated with a special anti-posting finish. Internally, they are fitted with corrosion-resistant liners, with some versions enhanced with lightweight moulded polyethylene for added durability.

The first phase of the installation has targeted high-traffic areas within the CBD. The county plans to roll out more bins in neighbourhoods, public parks, and transport hubs in the coming weeks.

An image released by the Nairobi County Government on June 6 showed officials installing the new units along key streets in the city centre.

The initiative marks a major step in Nairobi’s drive to modernise public amenities and instil civic responsibility among city residents.
