Veteran musician from DRC and a Lingala Maestro Papa Noel has died .
Born on Christmas Day of 1940, the year of our Lord in Kinshasa, Papa Noel is remembered for such hits as Sisi.
Born Antoine Nedule Monswet was a legendary guitarist and a Sokous icon.
He was a pillar of the Franco Luambo Makiadi led T.P.O.K Jazz, which ruled the Congolese music scene from the 1950s through the 1980s, helped define soukous as a genre, and Papa Noel’s guitar playing was a central element in its success.
In the early 2000s, Papa Noel embraced a new chapter in his career by founding the band Kékélé, a group that celebrated the rich traditions of Congolese music while introducing a fresh wave of talent. As its leader, he brought a deep sense of history and artistry to the ensemble. However, his battle with illness in the later years of his life prevented him from fully participating in some of Kékélé’s later tours and recordings, though his influence remained ever-present.
Papa Noel was Known for hits such as Tangawisi(that Faya Tess violated and mutilated), Kizungu zungu, Bon Samaritan, and Bel Ami. Great composer, arranger, and guitarist.
