Following a High Court ruling on October 31, 2024, which lifted the orders barring the appointment of a new Deputy President, Professor Kithure Kindiki has been sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy President.
This historic change, which saw the departure of Rigathi Gachagua from office, also brought Dr. Joyce Kithure, Prof. Kindiki’s spouse, into the national spotlight as the country’s new Second Lady.
On November 1, 2024, Kindiki took the oath of office, marking a new chapter not only for him but also for his wife, Dr. Joyce Kithure, whose public life as Second Lady begins.
Although relatively unknown to Kenyans before her husband’s inauguration, Dr. Joyce’s extensive academic and professional background is now gaining attention.
Academic Background and Career
Dr. Joyce Kithure holds a PhD in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Nairobi, which she attained in 2013, as well as a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in the same field from the same institution.
Before Kindiki’s appointment as Deputy President, Dr. Joyce was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi in the Department of Environmental Chemistry, though it remains unclear if she will continue her teaching career following her new responsibilities as Second Lady.
Family Life
Dr. Joyce and Prof. Kindiki have been married since 2001, when Prof. Kindiki was a lecturer in law at Moi University. The couple has three children – Imani, Neema, and Mwende – whose lives have remained private despite their father’s high-profile political career.
During his inauguration, Prof. Kindiki expressed gratitude to Dr. Joyce for her support, highlighting her dedication to their family, particularly during times when his political duties required him to be away.

Role as Second Lady
As Kenya’s Second Lady, Dr. Joyce will have the opportunity to launch an initiative that she will champion throughout her tenure.
Her predecessor, Dorcas Rigathi, focused on boy-child empowerment, advocating against drug abuse and promoting the welfare of young men.
